FOAF

Folklore, Legends and the Stories we Swear are True

FOAF stands for “friend of a friend”, the folklorist's name for the unnamed source behind every urban legend. It always happened to someone you almost know.

Each episode tells a story we swear is true: ghost stories, urban legends and local folklore, and where they really came from.

Ostension

Legends Brought to Life

Ostension is the folklorist's word for acting a legend out rather than simply telling it. Six legends from the West Midlands. In each episode we trace where a legend came from and how it spread, talk to the people who keep it alive, then tell it again as an original horror audio drama.

Every drama is an experiment in the craft of fear: what happens to horror when you can only hear it?

  1. Who put Bella in the wych elm?

Hagley Wood, 1943. A drama built from archival fragments, as the legend itself was built from graffiti.

    Pilot
  2. The Phantom Battle of Edgehill

Warwickshire, 1642. The armies that fought again in the sky, told through the sound of the battlefield.

  3. Something on the Chase

Cannock Chase. Modern legends of the woods, and a figure you never quite hear clearly.

    Planned
  4. The Grey Lady of Aston Hall

Birmingham. A locked room, a Jacobean house, and the weight of silence.

    Planned
  5. Mary Ashford

Erdington, 1817. A case that changed English law, and how a death becomes a legend.

    Planned
  6. The Empty Auditorium

A haunted Birmingham theatre, recorded inside the building after the audience has gone.

Episodes that involve real deaths are made with care for the people at their heart. Content notes are given at the start of each episode.
